When everything fail

If your computer reboots to a blank desktop after running Windows XP's System Restore, boot the PC into Safe Mode by holding down the F8 key as you start it up.
Then open System Restore-from the Start Menu, select All Programs,Accessories,System Tools and then System Restore- to reverse the change.Safe Mode which disables all but the essential parts of Windows, can sometimes help extract a PC from dead-end scenarios like this.
